Day Eleven, Poetic Asides with Robert Lee Brewer - 2011 April PAD Challenge: Day 11

Poetic Asides with Robert Lee Brewer - 2011 April PAD Challenge: Day 11

For today's prompt, take the phrase "Maybe (blank);" replace the blank with a word or phrase; make the new phrase the title of your poem; and then, write the poem. Some example titles might be: "Maybe I should've read the instructions first," "Maybe I was wrong," "Maybe the world is flat," or whatever else y'all can muster.

Maybe I Should Have Looked Ahead

Hindsight is 20/20.
Isn't that what they say?
Those that throw stones in glass houses
ruminating all the ways we, you, I,
didn't know.
Didn't see.
Didn't understand how it was to be.
The choice was made from the heart,
not the head.
To pursue what seemed right,
but instead,
it lead
to devastation, frustration...
phillipic emancipation.
From the truth one seeks
when they realize...
What lies beneath is not what lies
in the precocious child,
filled with wonder and delight
choosing the left and the right,
to mark their future path,
looking forward but not back
to all the warnings signs given,
the cutting of the ribbon
stepping into the hole that should have been filled
with posterity and clarity.
Instead disparity abounds,
no laugh of the clowns,
as you drown in the choices,
made from voices
deep within,
not knowing
the 20/20 vision of the future
when maybe...
You should have looked ahead.
